Sam Goes Unclaimed On Waivers

(Undated) -- It looks like defensive end Michael Sam's dream of becoming the first openly gay player in the NFL is on hold for now. He went unclaimed on waivers after the Rams released him prior to Saturday's 53-man roster deadline. He is now free to sign with any team in the NFL, though he may ultimately wind up sitting out the year. Sam could also be signed to a team's practice squad, which would enable him to practice every week but not play in games.
The former University of Missouri All-American made national headlines when he became the first openly gay player drafted into the NFL. However, the odds were against Sam as a late round draft pick on a team with tremendous depth at defensive end.
