U.S. Supreme Court Grants Stay On Utah Gay Marriage Recognition

(Salt Lake City, UT) -- Same-sex marriages performed in Utah will not be recognized by the state after the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to stay an appeals court ruling. About 13-hundred marriages took place while the state's ban on gay marriage was briefly lifted in December. Last week the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled those marriages had to be recognized pending an appeal of the gay marriage ban. Recognition of those marriages would have allowed the couples to apply for legal benefits afforded other married couples in the state.
