May Retail Sales Miss Expectations

(Undated) -- Retail sales rose less than expected last month, gaining only three-tenths of one percent. Car sales were the bright spot in May, followed by sales at building materials and garden equipment stores. The Commerce Department today is upgrading retail sales numbers for April, which has some economists predicting an uptick in the overall economy for this quarter.
