Massive Solar Flares Nearly Knocked Out Earth's Electricity

(Undated) -- A new report by NASA is revealing how dangerous solar flares can be and how Earth missed a return to the Dark Ages by about a week. Two years ago in June, the Sun unleashed one of the most powerful solar storms ever recorded. If they had happened nine days earlier, Earth would have been in the path of two "coronal mass ejections" that would have knocked out power grids around the world. NASA estimates the damage could have topped two-and-a-half-trillion dollars and that today much of the world would still be without electricity.
