NIXON ANNOUNCES PLAN TO MAKE COLLEGE MORE AFFORDABLE FOR MIDDLE-CLASS

BoeingST. LOUIS -- Attorney General Jay Nixon today announced the Missouri Promise, a new plan to provide a pathway for middle-class Missourians to earn a four-year degree from a state college or university -- tuition free. Nixon announced his plan on the campuses of the University of Missouri at Saint Louis, Columbia and Kansas City. "With tuition skyrocketing at colleges and universities across the state, too many middle-class families in Missouri are getting squeezed by the cost a college education," Attorney General Nixon said. "While other states have been making college more affordable and accessible, Missouri has moved backwards. The Missouri Promise will create a pathway to a four-year degree for those families struggling to afford college tuition during these difficult economic times. We must make the dream of a college education a reality for all Missouri families."

RULE TARGETS ADVISER TITLES THAT MISLEAD SENIORS

CarnahanKansas City -- Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan has cracked down on the use of misleading titles that some financial advisers are using to exploit older investors. She said titles such as "Certified Senior Advisor," "Chartered Senior Financial Planner" or "Certified Financial Gerontologist" are used to lure thousands of seniors and their life's savings.

DURBIN CALLS FOR WINDFALL PROFITS TAX IN THE WAKE OF HUGE OIL PROFITS

DurbinCHICAGO, IL – “This week across Illinois the average consumer paid a record $3.71 a gallon for gasoline, while oil companies raked in record profits,” United States Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) said at a news conference in Chicago today. The Senator called for a windfall profits tax to hold oil companies accountable for unconscionable price gouging and profit taking while struggling families are paying sky high prices at the pump.

DurbinEAST PEORIA - The Colombia Free Trade Agreement would "level the playing field" for American business and stalling a vote on it leaves companies like Caterpillar Inc. at a disadvantage, a Republican contender for U.S. Senate said Wednesday. Steve Sauerberg said the pact, which Democratic leaders in the U.S. House of Representatives plan to indefinitely delay, would provide fair trading and economically benefit the U.S. because it would eliminate barriers U.S. exports to Colombia now face.
