Where Did We Go Wrong?

The man in the above video is Professor Marc Lamont Hill from Columbia University. When you watch his claims you’re probably disgusted. Initially, I felt the same. Upon further consideration, I’ve decided it makes me sad. Sad for him, sad for society. He’s the perfect example of an individual who has been stripped of his sensitivity, compassion and grasp on reality. I’m in no way, shape or form an advocate for censoring media.
I grew up as the restrictions were rapidly disintegrating and almost nothing offends me. Unfortunately, I don’t find this admiration that shocking. The news package could have been extracted directly from a modern day action film. Why wouldn’t he think it was exciting? Why wouldn’t a manhunt ending in a fiery shootout be entertaining? And in this story wouldn’t it be awesome if the bad guy actually turned out to be a good guy with a cause? Hill admitting the entertainment value doesn’t make him a monster--it makes him an idiot--but he’s just being honest. As a society we let things get this far. It makes me sad.
