Bob Costas on Gun Control, Top Teams Losing Fans, and Are YOU Ready to Ram It?

There are lots of sports stories to talk about on the blog today, so why don’t we start of with something goofy before we get to the serious stuff. Everyone remembers the 1985 Chicago Bears JAM ‘Super Bowl Shuffle,’ but how many remember the L.A. Rams had a JAM of their own?

We now present ‘Ram It’ (all 6 glorious minutes of it).

After all of that awesome hilarity I hate to get serious, but let’s talk about the NFL tragedy over the weekend.

On Saturday, 25-year-old Kansas City Chiefs linebacker JOVAN BELCHER fatally shot his girlfriend, then drove to the team's practice facility and killed himself in front of the GM and the coach.

Here are the four things you need to know:

#1.) Belcher and his girlfriend, 22-year-old Kasandra Perkins, had been together three years, and had a 3-month-old daughter named Zoe. But they just broke up two weeks ago. And this weekend was one of the first times they'd talked since then. Kasandra and some of her friends went to a TREY SONGZ concert Friday night, then hit the after-party. She and Belcher began arguing around 7:00 A.M. Saturday morning, when she finally got back to their home in Kansas City. Belcher ended up shooting her multiple times, and police say Jovan's MOTHER witnessed the murder.

#2.) After he shot Kasandra, Belcher drove to the Chiefs' practice facility at Arrowhead Stadium, and ended up talking to general manager Scott Pioli, and head coach Romeo Crennel. Police had already been called, and when they arrived, they saw Crennel and Pioli talking to Belcher, who had the gun to his head. Crennel and Pioli were trying to talk Belcher into putting the gun down, but it didn't work. He actually thanked them for all they'd done for him . . . then SHOT himself right there in front of them.

#3.) The Chiefs' game against the Carolina Panthers still went ahead on Sunday, and the Chiefs ended up winning, 27-to-21. It was their first win in two months. The Chiefs had a moment of silence for victims of domestic violence before the game, but didn't mention Belcher. Probably a good decision, as Belcher IS a murderer. Plus they avoid what happened to the WWE a few years back, when they held a tribute to CHRIS BENOIT after he died . . . then they found out he'd murdered his wife and son. After the game, Crennel said his thoughts and prayers were with the families of both Kasandra and Jovan. And he declined to discuss the details of what happened on Saturday Belcher had been with the Chiefs for four seasons, after being undrafted out of the University of Maine.

#4.) The motive is still unknown, but some people are wondering . . . is this another piece of evidence that the concussions caused by football can transform people in unthinkable ways? Reports are coming out that Belcher may have suffered short-term memory loss and other concussion-related symptoms recently, after taking hits in the game against the Cincinnati Bengals on November 18th. And there's talk that he even sat out last week's game because of it. Reports also say that he took lots of painkillers and drank HEAVILY on a regular basis. A lot of that comes from a supposed "friend" of Belcher's who wrote in to the website Deadspin.com, and said that Belcher and his girlfriend had been fighting A LOT. In fact, she had moved out with their daughter and only recently came back.

The other theory is that they started arguing because Belcher thought Kasandra CHEATED on him with Trey Songz . . . even though she'd never even met him. She didn't hang out with any guys at the after-party, and was never even near Trey. But Belcher was upset she didn't come right home after the show. She actually had to leave the party after getting an angry text from Belcher . . . and that was the last time her friends saw her.

This is just an all-around tragic story, the worst part being their daughter will grow up without her parents.

Bob Costas quoted a Kansas City writer talking about the tragedy – and gun control - at Halftime during Sunday Night Football.

I don’t think it was the time nor place for Costas to make these statements, and am a little surprised he would quote Whitlock instead of just speaking his mind. Leave your comments about this below.

My favorite sports teams are the Miami Dolphins and the Orlando Magic. Neither team has had a good run for quite a while, but I’m no fair weather fan and I hate to see either club close down. Well there's a new list out of the pro sports teams who are RUNNING OUT OF FANS.

And it makes one thing clear: Fair weather fans make or break your attendance.

The list is based on how much each team's attendance has declined over the past decade. It covers the four major sports in the U.S.: Baseball, the NFL, the NBA and ice hockey (HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA – hockey! HAHAHAHAAHAHHAHAHAHA ok).

NINE of the 13 teams on the list are in the bottom 10 in their respective leagues, for their win-loss record over the past decade. When the team starts losing, clearly the attendance starts dropping. Those are the fair-weather fans. Here's the full list of 13 teams running out of fans . . .

#1.) Seattle Mariners, MLB. Down 51.4%.

#2.) Cleveland Indians, MLB. Down 38.7%.

#3.) Houston Astros, MLB. Down 36.1%.

#4.) Arizona Diamondbacks, MLB. Down 32%. They'd just won a World Series ten years ago.

WOW the top four are baseball teams!

#5.) Dallas Stars, NHL. Down 23.2%. This almost doesn’t count, as hockey is not a real sport.

#6.) Oakland Athletics, MLB. Down 22.6%.

#7.) Detroit Pistons, NBA. Down 22.3%.

#8.) New York Mets, MLB. Down 22%.

#9.) Baltimore Orioles, MLB. Down 19.7%. Even though they FINALLY just got good again, the fans haven't fully come back.

#10.) Columbus Blue Jackets, NHL. Down 19.2%.

#11.) Washington Wizards, NBA. Down 19.1%. Ten years ago, MICHAEL JORDAN was there finishing his career…and nobody cared then either.

#12.) Milwaukee Bucks, NBA. Down 19%.

#13.) Miami Dolphins, NFL. Down 17.1%.This is the only NFL team on the list.

WAIT – my Fins are the ONLY NFL team on this list?

How can the Miami Dolphins be losing fans when their cheerleaders make videos like THIS?

I will give up my gun when you can show me that all the bad guys don’t have them either. –Dave Glover.

Guns don’t kill People-- People kill people with whatever is available. Anything can be used as a weapon A hand, foot, head, elbow, forearm, voice, rock , club, stick, gun, even a microphone when it’s attached to a “brain”--. It’s an individual’s mental state that matters. If you could nurture it to a point of total peace, there wouldn’t be any need for guns. There would be no killing of other humans at the hand of other humans. So the question is, Where does one go to learn “Peace”? Personally I follow the teachings of Jesus-I would say they are a good example, but if there is another religion or belief that brings others this kind of peace than at least we move in the right direction as a society. Until that heavely end or utopian dream is achieved, man will kill man.
After all, we are products of our society and it has always been man's nature to kill.
